HARRISON — The historic Scribner’s Saw Mill & Homestead will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays July 7 and 21. This year’s focus is the restoration of the wooden hearth in the blacksmith shop.
The original 1846 blacksmith shop was the first building constructed on site for the purpose of keeping the drills, used in harvesting the granite from the river’s east bank, sharp.
The shop was also used as a bunkhouse for the men who were harvesting the granite and building the granite dam. The original 4-by-4-foot hearth was built of wood and filled with ash to keep the heat of the fire from burning the wooden structure. The bellows was brought to the site by Worthy Barrows (the original owner of the mill) from his tannery site in Bolsters Mills.
Visitors may tour the saw mill, the long shed where shingles are manufactured, the blacksmith shop and the 1849 homestead with its barn containing a collection of early sawmill equipment, and ice house.
A $5 donation for each adult is requested. Visit scribnersmill.org for more information about the mill. Private or group tours are available by calling 207-583-6455. Scribner’s Mill is found south of Bolsters Mills on Jesse Mill Road.
