STATEWIDE (WGME) — The age to buy tobacco in Maine will increase from 18 to 21 this weekend.
State lawmakers overrode Governor Paul LePage’s veto of the legislation last year.
The new law also applies to electronic cigarettes.
The American Cancer Society Cancer Action network says delaying the age when people first try tobacco can reduce the risk that they will become addicted.
Five other states have voted to raise the age of tobacco sales to 21. Massachusetts lawmakers approved the change on Thursday.
