FARMINGTON — A local man accused of sexually assaulting a girl younger than 18 between Feb. 1 and April 1 pleaded not guilty Monday to the Franklin County charges.

Joseph Magee, 40, of Farmington was indicted Thursday on two felony counts of gross sexual assault.

The teenage girl told police in April that while holding a hammer, Magee raped her, according to Farmington Detective Marc Bowering’s affidavit filed with a Franklin County court

A conviction on one of the assault charges is punishable by up to 30 years in prison, while the other is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Magee also admitted Monday in Franklin County Superior Court to violating release conditions.

Magee was indicted recently in Somerset County on 16 sexual assault charges involving a girl younger than 18 and another younger than 14.

Judge Maria Woodman appointed lawyer Scott Hess to represent Magee in both the Farmington and Somerset County cases.

Woodman ordered Magee held without bail, subject to review upon motion of counsel.

A hearing on a motion to suppress evidence is scheduled for Aug. 23 at Superior Court.

The charges in Franklin and Somerset counties might be consolidated, according to Hess.
