STANDISH — Schoolhouse Arts Center will be holding auditions for the production of the Agatha Christie mystery “And Then There Were None,” from noon to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 15, and from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, July 16 Auditions will be held at the center, 16 Richville Road, Standish.

Character Justice Lawrence Wargrave comes across as a staid government employee — a judge who believes in upholding the law to the fullest. Yet Wargrave isn’t the cuddly, retired judge he seems to be. Once the lights are out (or the door is closed) he’s predatory, evil and cruel.

Vera Claythorne fights to win in the not-so-fun game that Justice Wargrave has laid out for his guests, but it’s not because she’s a levelheaded girl who knows how to keep calm in a difficult situation — it’s because her sordid secret is the ugliest in a whole mansion full of ugly secrets.

Philip Lombard is a cocky young man, essentially a mass murderer who left a large group of natives to die when he was in the army, and completely unconcerned about his moral depravity.

Gen. John Macarthur comes across as a bit of a doddering fool. He’s always sitting off by himself and mumbling about cryptic things. But the truth is that Macarthur is a very tired and lonely old man who has been plagued by what he did for too long.

Emily Brent may seem like a harmless grandma with a pair of knitting needles, but don’t get too close; this is one old lady who is not about to bake a batch of chocolate chip cookies. If her moral exactitude causes anyone pain, so much the better. All she cares about is her own black-and-white definitions of morality vs. sin.

Dr. William Armstrong might just be the second most upstanding guest on the island. A respected doctor, he can’t get enough of the fact that he’s led a fine professional life. Or so it seems.

Like Lombard, William Blore is selfish, self-centered and self-preserving. Due to his dark triad of personality traits, it comes as no surprise that he ends up on Soldier Island.

Anthony Marston is a young, rich and egotistical man who Wargrave chooses as a victim, because he ran over two kids with his car and didn’t seem to register that it was a bad thing.  Anthony is a rich and attractive man who’s chosen to act like a spoiled child, with no regard to consequences.

Show dates are Sept. 28 to Oct. 7. Those auditioning should be prepared to do cold readings from the script.
