BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin Museum of Art, 9400 College Station, has announced its calendar of events for August. Closing on Sunday, Aug. 19, will be the exhibit “Made in Maine,” which features a selection of artworks created in Maine during the first half of the 20th century. Winslow Homer was an important influence for many artists who worked in Maine at this time, including George Bellows, Marsden Hartley, Rockwell Kent, Andrew Wyeth and Marguerite Zorach, all of whom are represented in this presentation.

“Winslow Homer and the Camera: Photography and the Art of Painting,” the exhibit which began on June 23, continues at the museum through Oct. 28. This exhibition explores the question of Homer’s relationship with the medium of photography and its impact on his artistic practice. This exhibition adds a new dimension to our appreciation of this pioneering American painter, demonstrating his recognition that photography did not undermine, but instead complemented his larger artistic interests.
