LEWISTON — Police said it was likely an accident when two people fell Wednesday night from a third-floor porch on Pierce Street and were seriously injured.
The incident remains under investigation, according to a statement from police Lt. David St. Pierre.
The two are identified as Omar Omar, 41, of New York and Hindia Mohamed, 31, of Lewiston, according to the statement. Omar was transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland, and Mohamed remained at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, according to the statement.
Police Detective David Levesque also was taken to CMMC after inhaling glass when he kicked down a door while responding to the scene. On Thursday, St. Pierre said Levesque had been treated and released and was back on the job.
At the scene Wednesday night, the side porch railing on the third story of the three-story building at 133 Pierce St. was missing. The pair fell onto the paved driveway of the house next door, and a pile of railing slats sat on the ground.
The building is described as a three-family residence owned by Bailbrook Properties LLC of Standish, according to city property records.
David Hediger, director of planning and code enforcement for the city, said the building had no history of code violations.
“It’s a building that’s in relatively good shape compared to many of the buildings on Pierce Street,” he said.
Inspectors went through the building after the accident and cited the owner for the broken railing and a broken window.
But, he said, “other than the damages that happened that evening, there were no other immediate property maintenance code issues.”
