FALMOUTH — Two players that were at the front of the field after the first round in July’s Maine Amateur Championship will be the last two players standing in the Match Play Invitational at Falmouth Country Club.
Cole Anderson and Drew Powell made it out of Wednesday’s quarterfinal and semifinal rounds and will square off Thursday for the Match Play title. Anderson was the runner-up at the Maine Am, and Powell finished fourth while playing in the final threesome with Anderson and eventual champ Jack Wyman.
Anderson, the No. 1 seed out of the Samoset Resort, beat 25th-seeded Dustin Freeman (The Ledges) in the quarterfinals, 5 and 3, then ousted No. 28 seed Drew Kane (Prouts Neck CC) in the semifinals, 6 & 5. Both Freeman and Kane made underdog runs to their respective last rounds before being eliminated by Anderson.
Powell, a Penobscot Valley CC member and the No. 2 seed, breezed through his quarterfinal, beating No. 23 seed Patrick Bucklin on his home course, 7 & 5, before needing two extra holes — 20 total — to beat 11th-seeded Joe Hamilton (Biddeford-Saco CC) in the semifinals.
