LEWISTON — St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center is hoping to break ground next month on a $4.65 million building for its Oncology Center, according to an application filed with the city Planning Board.

The project goes to the board for approval Monday.

The center is planned for Campus Avenue, connecting the operating room building with a medical office at 99 Campus Ave. In a letter to the board, Michael Gotto of Stoneybrook Consultants said the plan is to relocate the Oncology Department to the new 14,028-square-foot building, “where the internal spaces are designed to meet new medical standards, including patient care innovations to address evolving governmental regulations.”

The former space will be renovated to serve adult psychiatric patients who will move from what Gotto calls the wood-framed 1902 building, which is being phased out for fire safety reasons. That building will eventually house business and administration.

The shift won’t affect the number of patients or doctors at the Oncology Center.

The new building will be two stories and in a spot that had been marked for an operating room expansion, Gotto wrote.

Three parking spaces will be lost. The hospital hopes to occupy the new center by next summer and plans to fund it through a bond and philanthropy, he wrote.

A St. Mary’s spokesman didn’t respond to a call for comment.
