SOUTH PARIS — Peter Joseph Seames Sr., 91, of Greenwood passed away Saturday, Sept. 8, with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Greenwood on June 22, 1927, the fourth child of Peter J. and Laura (Cole) Seames. He attended school in Greenwood, and it was in that area that he developed his love of the outdoor way of life. He spent many hours logging, hunting and fishing.

On July 15, 1950, he married the love of his life, Elsie Roberts. They celebrated 68 beautiful years together. Peter had a great work ethic, first working for the town of Greenwood, then spending nearly half a century working for P.H. Chadbourne Co. in Bethel. After retirement, he manned his “Papa Pete” truck, rescuing and helping those in need. He also drove shuttle at Mt. Abram during the winters.

Peter took great pride and joy in teaching his children and grandchildren the skills of hunting, fishing and nature. He and his wife would spend time camping, fishing, hunting and tearing up the dance floors at local dance halls. Even as the ravages of Alzheimer’s affected him, he never lost the desire to be outdoors, to hunt or to be with his loving wife.

Peter is survived by his wife, Elsie, of Greenwood; his daughter, Diane Howe, of Bethel; his son, Peter (Cynthia) Seames Jr., of Oxford; his grandchildren Andrea Howe, Dustin (Sara) Howe, Alyssa Howe (Jeff Freeman), Rebekah Howe (Jason) Coolidge, Peter Seames IV (Sara), Misty (Damien) Thomas, Crystal and Nick Seames; his great-grandchildren Skylar, Savannah, Dylan, Jordyn, Tyler, Emily, Kimball, Damien, Aiden, Alexis, Owen, Quinn, Mekhi, Bentley, Ariana, Logan and Emily; his brother, Bill (Judy) Seames, of Bryant Pond; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents; his brothers Stanley and Raymond; and his sister, Evelyn Johnson.

A very special thank-you to granddaughter-in-law, Sara Seames, of West Paris, for ensuring Peter’s care the past few years.

“A good man never dies- In worthy deed and prayer And helpful hands, and honest eyes, If smiles or tears be there; Who lives for you and me- Lives for the world he tries To help-he lives eternally. A good man never dies. Who lives to bravely take His share of toil and stress And, for his weaker fellow’s sake, Makes every burden less- He may, at last, seem worn- Lie fallen-hands and eyes Folded yet, though we mourn and mourn, A good man never dies.” — James Whitecomb Riley.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at 1 p.m. at Hicks Cemetery in Greenwood. Arrangements are under the care of Chandler Funeral Homes, 37 Vernon St., Bethel.
