AUBURN — Joseph A. Unnold, 89, a resident of Lewiston, passed away peacefully Thursday, Sept. 13, at the Hospice House in Auburn.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Feb. 17, 1929, the son of Joseph and Antoinette (Saydoc) Unnold. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson Vocational High School in Queens, N.Y., and went on to work as a silk-screen printer in Flushing, N.Y.
He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, but spent most of his time in Munich, Germany. After his tour of service he went to work at Cornwall Industries in South Paris as a graphic artist and retired after 42 years.
During that time he met and married the former Alice Moore, and as a Legionaire they both loved to dance at Post 22.
Joseph loved doing oil paintings and was an exceptional artist who also made miniatures for his wife, an interest they both shared. His paintings are distributed all over Maine.
Survivors include his daughter, Deborah, of Maryland; a sister, Antoinette Pirie, of Massachusetts; and a niece, Judy Williams, of Augusta.
He was predeceased by his wife, Alice, in 2010.
Graveside committal prayers will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, concluding with military honors.
