JAY — A ceremony marking National POW-MIA Recognition Day will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the POW/MIA Remembrance Bridge on Riley Road. The public is invited to attend.

The ceremony is being presented by the Frank L. Mitchell Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3335, Lane Dube AMVETS Post 33 and George Bunten American Legion Post 10, and their Auxiliaries.

United Bikers of Maine will ride from the Turner mall north on Route 4 to the Livermore Falls bridge, continue north and turn left onto Riley Road, cross the POW/MIA Bridge and return to the POW/MIA Monument of All Wars on Riley Road by 6:30 p.m. The 18-mile run is in memory of the 18 Vietnam War prisoners of war and missing in action from Maine. The bikers will be escorted by local police departments.

According to VFW Post 3335 Commander Ken Blake Jr., “Since World War II, more than 83,000 military men and women are missing or unaccounted for, and never made it home. This ceremony recognizes the sacrifice and dedication of our military members and families, that we shall never forget them.”

Attendees are asked to arrive early enough to observe the United Bikers’ part in the solemn service.

After the ceremony, refreshments will be served at the VFW Post at 64 Jewell St.
