PARIS — Selectman John Andrews announced at Monday evening’s board meeting that the Civil War monument in Moore Park will be cleaned and clear-coated for free by an Oxford business within the next week.
At a June meeting, Andrews said he was contacted by Caleb White, a veteran and former South Paris resident, about getting the monument professionally cleaned and coated.
The park is bordered by Route 26 and High Street.
White wrote in his letter to Andrews that he would pay for the work.
Andrews said Monday that David Pratt of Bolsters Monumental Works in Oxford agreed to do the job for free.
“He’s the one who did it 15 years ago,” Andrews said. “We should have the monument looking sharp for the fall.”
In other business, Town Manager Vic Hodgkins said he, Norway Town Manager Dennis Lajoie and Oxford Town Manager Butch Asselin had a phone conference with RealTerm Energy to review the work for upcoming streetlight upgrades in all three towns.
Town officials from Norway, Oxford, Paris and Poland met in February with Paul Vesel of RealTerm Energy, who told them the towns could save “somewhere between 75 and 80 percent” on streetlights if they switched to LED bulbs. He also advised an audit of streetlights would determine the amount of savings.
All three towns voted to move forward with the project.
Hodgkins said the audit should begin in the next few weeks.
Hodgkins said that “after we talked with RealTerm and amongst ourselves, it became apparent that we don’t want to try and install them in the late winter. Right now, we’re shooting for a springtime installation.”
Selectmen also voted unanimously to approve changes to the town’s General Assistance ordinance. The changes were minor adjustments made by the state, according to the board.
