Cedar Street in Lewiston and Broad Street in Auburn — at the approaches to the Bernard Lown Peace Bridge — will be closed for paving in the direction from Lewiston to Auburn on Wednesday starting at 6 a.m.
The detour will direct vehicles onto Lincoln Street to Main Street in Lewiston and across the Longley Memorial Bridge into Auburn.
The detour is expected to remain in place until 3:30 p.m. The closure and detour applies only to traffic heading toward Auburn.
According to Lewiston Public Works Director Dave Jones, the work is weather dependent and forecast rain could delay the work until Thursday. Finish surface paving will be done in a few weeks, he said.
The paving is part of the $6 million overhaul of the Bernard Lown Peace Bridge, which began in April and is expected to last until mid-November.
The bridge overhaul will increase the lane widths to 11 feet, while creating 3-foot buffer lanes and a 5-foot shoulder. The work will also include steel and joint repairs, paint and resurfacing.
Paving on the bridge approaches will create one lane in each direction, with a center turning lane.
