LIVERMORE FALLS — Regional School Unit 73 Superintendent Todd LeRoy told directors Thursday night he is focusing on improving education for students and building relationships with town managers in his first month on the job.

LeRoy, who was named to the position last month, said he has met weekly with members of the administrative team, which has been reading and discussing a book about change and education.

“It’s going to help us as a group to decide what we can do to make education in this district centered around the kids,” he said.

He plans to meet with the town managers of Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls to build further connections, he said.

“It’s important that I work closely with the town managers. I want them to see me not as someone who is always looking for more tax dollars but working with them as allies not the competition,” he said.

The superintendent is also looking for strong people from the towns to work on strategic planning.

The board also heard about recent activities at the Spruce Mountain High School.

Junior class Treasurer Riley Gray and Secretary Acacia Fournier spoke on behalf of the Student Council about Homecoming Week activities, which included a poster contest themed “Destination.”

“The freshmen had Hollywood; the sophomores, Paris; the juniors, Vegas; and the seniors, Disney World,” Gray said. “There was a pep rally Monday to kick off the week and each day was a different dress-up day. Monday was School Spirit, Tuesday, Groovy Tuesday, Wednesday was Pink, Thursday was Happy Tourist Day and Friday was Fan Day.

“There was a pep rally Friday. There was a tie for first between the freshmen and juniors. A spur-of-the-moment tug-of-war determined the winner,” Gray said.

For the homecoming parade, each class decorated a float.

“The freshmen took third place for their Hollywood skit that depicted people you might see there,” Fournier said. “The sophomores had the Eiffel Tower on their backdrop and were fourth. For their Vegas float, the juniors had a casino with slot machines and took second. In first were the seniors who built a castle and had characters from various Disney movies.”

Gray said teachers had a booth at the football game and raised about $500 for the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital. They also had a Hawaii float featuring the song “Baby Shark.”

Gray said the Student Council plans Phoenix Olympics, a similar week in February when students decorate hallways.

The school mascot is a phoenix.
