Q&A

1) What legislation do you support, if any, to address the state’s opiate crisis?
Expanding Medicaid. Encouraging physicians to use non-opioid pain medication protocols first, reserving opioids as a last resort, especially for acute pain issues. See https://www.painpack.co/

2) What legislation do you support, if any, to address failures in the state’s child abuse prevention system?
I think it’s primarily a funding issue — providing enough resources so that we can have staff to respond to reports of child abuse and to find appropriate placements.

3) Should schools continue to push forward with proficiency-based diplomas? Why or why not?
I would like to see schools move toward proficiency-based diplomas.

4) Are you in favor of some type of universal health care for Maine residents? Why, or why not?
I think we need to move toward this type of system, at least for some basic level of care, and then offer opportunities to purchase insurance for extended or more comprehensive care.

5) Do you support Question 1 (the 3.8% tax to fund the home care program)? Why, or why not?
I don’t support Q1, although I do appreciate the need to increase pay for home care workers.

6) Are you frustrated by the political sniping, exaggeration and even lies between the parties and their supporters that have threatened progress usually reached through respect and reasoned compromise? If so, what will you personally do to make the situation better?

I’m running as a common sense independent in large part because I’m frustrated by the parties. I’m committed to hearing all sides and working with everyone to come up with workable compromises.

7) Tell voters something about yourself that they don’t already know, and might surprise them.
I spent my teenage years in horse barns, and rode competitively in three-day eventing.
