Q&A

1) What legislation do you support, if any, to address the state’s opiate crisis?
The newly increased funding for treatment and additional drug agents. More effort toward mentoring is essential; supportive relationships are key to young people seeing hope in their future.

2) What legislation do you support, if any, to address failures in the state’s child abuse prevention system?
Last month we passed legislation to hire more caseworkers and improve communications to address abuse reports. Our priority needs to be doing what is in the best interests of the child.

3) Should schools continue to push forward with proficiency-based diplomas? Why or why not?
The Legislature recently allowed individual school districts to decide. If schools have found success with PBDs, they should continue. Otherwise, traditional standards make more sense.

4) Are you in favor of some type of universal health care for Maine residents? Why, or why not?
Everyone needs health care. We need to find a way to ensure Mainers have access to it, but government-run health care is not the way to go. Reducing health care costs should be the focus.

5) Do you support Question 1 (the 3.8% tax to fund the home care program)? Why, or why not?
No! All four gubernatorial candidates, the Chamber of Commerce, and many others recognize this is bad for Maine. It’s a scam. Please read about it.

6) Are you frustrated by the political sniping, exaggeration and even lies between the parties and their supporters that have threatened progress usually reached through respect and reasoned compromise? If so, what will you personally do to make the situation better?                                                                                            Divergent viewpoints shouldn’t deteriorate to personal attacks. Our Legislature is almost equally divided between Democrats and Republicans. Reasoned compromise is the key to finding solutions.

7) Tell voters something about yourself that they don’t already know, and might surprise them.
To help promote McDonald’s all-day breakfast menu, I once dressed up as an Egg McMuffin and stood roadside waving at cars! My favorite place is on a mountain with overnight gear strapped to my back.
