HARTFORD — A local man has been arrested on felony robbery and aggravated criminal mischief charges after stealing a car and crashing it on Roundabout Road.

William Adams, 28, was arrested Sept. 28 on felony charges of robbery and aggravated criminal mischief, and misdemeanor charges of failing to report a motor vehicle accident and violating conditions of release.

The robbery charge carries a sentence of up to 30 years in prison, while the aggravated criminal mischief is punishable by up to five years in prison.

Adams was released from Oxford County Jail on $1,000 cash bail.

His bail conditions include no use or possession of alcohol or illegal drugs, being subject to random search and testing, not operating any motor vehicle unless lawfully licensed to do so, and having no contact with the victim of the crime.

According to an arrest affidavit written by Oxford County Sgt. Christopher Davis, several people called police the night of Sept. 28 about yelling in the area of Depot Street in Buckfield.

According to the affidavit, police received a call from a man who said Adams jumped him at the Park & Ride in Buckfield, stole his car and began diving quickly down the road.

After Davis arrived on the scene, the man explained he was meeting with friends at the Park & Ride and, upon arriving there, Adams walked up to his car and challenged him to a fight.

“(The man) told Adams that he wasn’t interested in fighting and that he was just waiting for his friends,” Davis wrote. “Adams started shoving (the man) and refusing to allow him near his car. Adams then forcefully shoved the owner from his car, got into the vehicle and began operating erratically on the road.”

Davis wrote that while the alleged victim began filling out a witness statement, Davis received word the victim’s car had been found crashed on Roundabout Road.

“It had extensive damage around the entire car, with parts strewn all over someone’s lawn,” Davis wrote. “It was apparent that the operator lost control and skidded off the roadway right into the ditch.”

Two deputies from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office discovered Adams on Hebron Road, near the crash site, with no shirt and a laceration on his right elbow.

“Adams denied stealing the car or being anywhere in the area,” Davis wrote.

“He currently lives on Pratt Hill Road in Hartford, which is many miles from where we were. He had no credible explanation for being on Hebron Road in Buckfield. He also admitted he had been drinking, which is a violation of his current bail conditions.”
