LEWISTON — A Bartlett Street man was indicted this week, accused of punching, kicking and stomping a man who was unconscious on Blake Street.

Omar Omar, 23, was indicted by an Androscoggin County grand jury on two counts of aggravated assault and one count of simple assault.

According to a police affidavit, on July 2, Omar punched a 39-year-old in the head and knocked him unconscious during an early-evening argument near 227 Blake St.

As the 39-year-old lay unmoving in the street, Omar stood over him, continuing to punch and kick the man, according to the sworn statement of Lewiston police officer Brian M. Beauparlant.

Police were later able to view video footage of the attack. They said that Omar continued to kick and punch the downed man even as witnesses attempted to pull him away.

At one point, police said, Omar started to walk away but then returned to stomp on the unconscious man’s head. The result was a victim who suffered a fracture to the bones on the side of his face, in addition to multiple cuts and contusions.

The 39-year-old was taken to Central Maine Medical Center. Police were later led to Omar as a suspect when he was identified by witnesses, one of whom was able to pick him out of a photo lineup.

Omar was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn where he has remained since.

At the time of the attack, many in downtown Lewiston were on edge because a man was beaten to death there a few weeks earlier. Police investigating the Blake Street assault, however, stressed that there was no connection between the beatings.
