NORWAY — Town Manager Dennis Lajoie told selectmen Thursday night the Opera House clock tower on Main Street has a “serious” leak that must be repaired to prevent water damage.
Lajoie told Chairman Bruce Cook and Selectman Mike Twitchell the clock tower roof is leaking worse than thought.
He said Lewiston-based contractor Hebert Construction has submitted a $5,412 proposal to fix the leaks.
“(Hebert Construction) said that it would also reach out to Mid-Maine Restoration in Boothbay to get a specialized piece of equipment that will allow them to reach the roof from the sidewalk,” Lajoie said.
Lajoie said that the fix would be temporary.
“It’ll patch up the roof and will buy us some years until we can afford a full renovation,” Lajoie said. “We have the money for it in reserves.”
While three selectmen — Russell Newcomb, Warren Sessions Jr. and Thomas Curtis — were not at Thursday’s meeting, Cook and Twitchell said they were comfortable authorizing Lajoie to contact Hebert Construction to find out when the contractor could deliver the equipment needed to fix the roof.
“That building is an important asset to the town,” Cook said, “and it sounds like it needs to be fixed soon.”
