FARMINGTON — Richard E. “Cud” Greenleaf, 84, a resident of Jay, passed away Thursday, Oct. 4, at Sandy River Center in Farmington, following a stroke he had in September.

He was born Sept. 16, 1934, in Jay, the son of Raymond and Arlene D. (Tripp) Greenleaf. He was a 1954 graduate of Jay High School. During his high school days he was remembered as a very talented athlete in basketball, football and baseball. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959. In 1964 at the Congregational Church in Wilton, he married Joan L. Davis. They enjoyed 54 years together before her passing on June 30, 2018.

Cud worked for the Jay Highway Department until his retirement in 1996. He loved keeping busy and worked cutting and selling firewood through the years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, four-wheeling and camping at Lobster Buoy in Thomaston. Cud especially enjoyed spending time with his family and following his grandchildren’s sporting and outdoor events. He loved giving them tips on pitching, passing and how to “flip-flick” their wrists when fly-fishing.

He is survived by his son, Terry Greenleaf, and “Taffy Jo” of Jay; five grandchildren, Tara L. Fitch and husband, Andrew, Travis A. Greenleaf and wife, Erica, Caleb L. Greenleaf, Cody R. Greenleaf and Carson R. Greenleaf; four great-grandchildren, Jace E. Fitch, Malachi T. Fitch, Evelynn L. Fitch and Sophia L. Greenleaf; his brother, Ronald Greenleaf, of Jay; and special friends Nancy Ryder, Trudy Greenleaf, Robert and Deidra Tozier, Mary Young and Becky Haskell.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Joan; his daughter, Tracy L. Greenleaf; and brother, Robert E. Greenleaf.
