I hope that the voters of Maine will join me in voting for Question 1, the universal home care initiative. Myself, I have some serious health issues. I have Marfan Syndrome — a connective tissue disorder. It has caused me to suffer multiple joint dislocations; it affects all the organs in the body but mostly the heart. The aortic roots can expand and burst. It also causes blindness. I also have Parkinson’s. I am fatigued a lot and in constant pain. I am 67 years old; my wife is 69. We could certainly use a little help around the house, and the initiative would provide that opportunity.
Question 1 would also provide some relief for the thousands of family caregivers across the state. I know first hand what it is like to care for loved ones at home. My wife has had three back surgeries and two knee replacements. She also suffers from fibromyalgia and thyroid issues. She had home health care after both knee surgeries and that was a godsend. I want to be able to care for her to the best of my ability, but things are getting more difficult. We all need a little help.
We are fortunate to own our own home and we are doing our best to take care of things here. The universal home care initiative would provide in-home services that I know my family will need down the road. That would help us stay in our home as long as possible.
