On Election Day this year, Maine voters have an incredible opportunity before them — Question 1, the Universal Homecare Initiative. It would ensure that all Maine senior citizens, veterans and disabled folks could stay at home as long as possible.

Everyone needs a little help as they age and doing things becomes more difficult. The initiative would provide for critical services that would make it possible for many elderly to stay at home.

The initiative is paid for with a tax on individual income over $128,400, not combined income. There is a lot of misinformation out there about who would pay higher taxes, and I have looked closely and it is really clear that the tax is for high income earners, not the middle class. Though, everyone who needs home care and is over 65 years of age, including the very wealthy, would have access to the program.

Maine voters have the opportunity to lead the nation in creating the best home care system for the elderly.
