DEAR SUN SPOTS: The City of Lewiston relies on approximately 150 citizens to run the city’s seven polling places for voters and we are recruiting people to work at the polls on Election Day, Nov. 6. This is an excellent way to see old friends and neighbors, meet new people and provide a service for the community. This is a paid position and training is provided. By law, workers must be registered voters of Lewiston and enrolled in the Democratic or Republican parties, or willing to enroll in one of these parties. DEAR SUN SPOTS: Thank you for your help in getting the word out for our New Auburn Village Hello-ween Celebration. You always go the extra mile! Despite Saturday being a very cold, rainy and snowy afternoon, we had more than 420 costumed participants attend our event and visit more than eighteen participating local shops and businesses. There were chilly fingers, toes and noses, but plenty of smiles as well.
UNAA is grateful to all of our dedicated volunteers and judges who braved the two and a half hours of freezing temperatures, our village businesses, everyone that donated prizes and candy (there were a bunch), the Auburn Police Cadets, Auburn Recreation Department, and the Boys and Girls Club for their haunted house and warm gym! Feedback all around has been excellent, despite the unsettled weather. Needless to say, the United New Auburn Association is grateful for the efforts that were put out by all. Thanks to everyone!

ANSWER: It truly is amazing what a community can accomplish when they all pull together, despite conditions that aren’t ideal. Halloween celebrations and “trick or treating” have certainly changed since those of us who grew up in the ’50s and ‘60s were kids. Children these days are lucky to have community organizations and caring adults who still want to see “the show go on.”
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m looking for an old Fairpoint phone book that has individual names and phone numbers of the Lewiston-Auburn area. The new books only have business listings. I will pay the postage fee if you mail it to me or I can pick it up. Thanks.

ANSWER: It’s discouraging that phone companies don’t take into account the number of people who still depend on a phone book. So many folks now only use cell phones and don’t even own a home phone any more.
