In midst of a three-game losing streak, the Twin City Thunder pulled off one of their biggest wins of the season by taking down the first-place team in the USPHL’s New England Division.
The Thuder def3eated the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Tri-Town Arena in Hooksett, New Hampshire.
“It was a good effort, everybody played hard, we needed that,” Thunder coach Doug Friedman said. “We’ve been in a down spot the past couple of games, so it was nice to get back into the win column.”
Friedman described the win as a perfect road game. Players were blocking shots, and he said if players are blocking shots, they usually win. Twin City also got some good goaltending from Jaxon Friedman, who made about 40 saves for the victory.
The Thunder put at least 30 shots on Monarchs goalie Raphael Gaughan.
After two period of scoreless action, the Thunder took a 2-0 lead with a pair of power play goals. The first one came from Zachary Simpson, with Jeromey Rancourt and Bobby Gervasi setting the tally, up at the at the 6:52 mark. The second goal came at the 9:34 mark when defenseman Etienne Crousle scored and Zachary Desmarais and Aleksi Petrow were credited with the assists.
“We had plenty of other chances in the third, and their goalie made some really big saves for them,” Friedman said. “Obviously, those two special teams goals were the difference makers, it helped the guys’ confidence and changed the momentum.”
The Monarchs picked up their only goal on the power play when Logan Rosser potted his first goal of the season with 5:43 remaining in the contest. Cody Colegrove had the assist.
The two teams face off in a rematch Friday at Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn at 7 p.m.
