WATERVILLE — Sophomore Taylor McVeigh had nine of her career-high 18 points in the fourth quarter as Bates College used an 23-7 to put away Johnson & Wales in a women’s basketball season-opener in the Thomas Tip-off on Friday.
Ariana Dalia had a double-double, putting in 11 points and grabbing 10 boards, while Melanie Binkhorst and Amaari Williams each chipped in nine points for the Bobcats.
Britney Gallagher was the top scorer for Johnson & Wales with 13 points.

BOSTON — David Farrance scored a power play goal for the winner from Patrick Harper and Jake Wise with 1:11 to play in regulation as the Terriers (3-4-1, 3-2-1 Hockey East) outlasted the Black Bears (3-5-1, 1-3-1) on Friday.
Eduard Tralmaks scored an unassisted goal at the 14:32 mark of the first period to give Maine the lead, before Boston University answered with second period power-play goals from Bobo Carpenter and Joel Farabee as the teams skated the last 20 minutes.
Tim Doherty pulled the Black Bears even on a power play goal, set up by Chase Pearson and Brady Keeper, with 5:51 remaining in the third.
Women’s Hockey
Northeastern 3, Maine 1
ORONO — Chloe Aurard opened the scoring midway through the first period and Alina Mueller added a pair of second-period goals for the Huskies (11-1-1, 10-0-1 Hockey East) against the Black Bears (7-6, 3-6) on Friday.
Celine Tedenby scored for Maine in the third period off an assist from Tereza Vanisova.
Aerin Frakel stopped 23 shots for Northeastern, while Carly Jackson had 26 saves for the Black Bears.
