FARMINGTON — A Jay man pleaded guilty Monday in Franklin County Superior Court to stalking a family member in May.

Details of the case against James E. Murphy Jr., 61, were not available, but the complaint against him simply said he acted in a way that caused the family member distress and inconvenience.

Ten other charges in seven cases were dismissed, according to court records.

Judge Susan Orman sentenced Murphy to 120 days of a one-year sentence, which he has already served.

Murphy was also ordered to serve one year of probation, take all medication as prescribed and follow all treatment recommended to the satisfaction of his probation officer. He is also required to sign a release to allow communication between the treatment provider and probation officer.

Andrews told the court that his office contacted all witnesses and family members, except for an extended family member who couldn’t be reached, and they wanted contact with Murphy.

Murphy cannot contact the extended family member, but that person can have the no-contact provision changed if they want to, Andrews said.

Among the charges dismissed were reckless conduct, refusing to submit to arrest or detention involving bodily injury, and driving to endanger.

They stemmed from a civil dispute in April at a home on Bridge Street. Murphy backed his truck out of a residence, struck a woman with it and left the scene, Police Chief Caton had said. She was not injured.

Later, Murphy met with police officer Dylan Rider at the Jay Police Department where Murphy tried to avoid arrest and backed his truck into a Livermore Falls police cruiser in the parking lot.
