Historical society open house
NEW GLOUCESTER — The first monthly New Gloucester Historical Society Archives Open House of 2019 will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 5, at the New Gloucester Meetinghouse, 389 Intervale Road (next to Town Hall).
This event is free and open to the public and genealogists are invited to attend with their research interests.
Library to host history presentation
AUGUSTA — The Heritage Center at Mill Park will present a local history event, “Manufacturing Augusta: The Kirschner Meat Processing Plant,” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, hosted at Lithgow Public Library, 45 Winthrop St.
Attendees will learn about the local history of industrial Augusta. Jan Michaud, founder of the Heritage Center at Mill Park, will share video interviews with former Kirschner workers and owners and will conclude the evening with a question and answer session.
The snow date will be Jan. 14, same time. This event is free and open to the public.

Area democrats to meet
POLAND — The next meeting of the Mechanic Falls, Minot, Poland Democrats will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the Ricker Library. This will be an opportunity to hear from some state senators and representatives and to share concerns.
Food for Thought luncheon
LEWISTON — On Friday, Jan. 11, Maine’s Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Fred Jordan will return to the Senior College Food for Thought luncheon with more information about history of medical-legal investigations and how they help solve the questions surrounding unexplained sudden death.
Jordan will present two cases. “The Case of the Missing Housewife” looks at how to create a corpus delicti (concrete evidence) if there is no body. The second is “Go West Young Man,” about a Maine boy who went to Oklahoma seeking fame and fortune in the early 1900s who was lost and never found. This event is free and open to the public.
The luncheon will be held in room 170 at the University of Southern Maine Lewiston-Auburn College, 51 Westminster St. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and the program begins at noon.
For folks wishing to have lunch, cost is $8 and advance reservations are required. To make reservations, call 207-753-6510 before noon Wednesday, Jan. 9. Food may also be purchased through the campus cafe.
Socrates Cafe to meet, hold discussion
WATERFORD — The Socrates Cafe local discussion group, will meet Monday, Jan. 7.
Agenda: 6:15 to 6:30 p.m., meet and greet; 6:30 to 8:30, discussion, topic is Comparing and Contrasting Traditional (Allopathic) With Holistic (Naturopathic) Medicine. Moderator will be Pat Stanley-Beals. Light refreshments provided.

Daughters of Isabella January meeting
RUMFORD — St. Timothy’s Circle 504, Daughters of Isabella, will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Holy Savior Parish Hall. Chairpersons for the meeting are Sandra Gamez and Evelyn Bodemer. Committee members are Marcelle Miller and Jolene Lovejoy.
The Daughters would like to welcome our newest member, Maria Haines. Congratulations to the following members who are celebrating their 25-year-plus membership with the Daughters of Isabella: Theresa Vaillancourt, 33 years; Joan Lepage, 50 years; and Rita Perry, 52 years.
