LEWISTON — Hassan Hussein scored 21 points with six 3-pointers but was outdone by Spencer Strong’s 30 point for Oxford Hills as the Vikings pulled away from the Blue Devils for a 68-53 Class AA North boys’ basketball victory Monday night.
The Vikings (5-4) took over with a 21-2 run in the second quarter. William Dieterich added 10 points, while Colton Carson chipped in eight in the win.
The Blue Devils fall to 2-6 with the loss. Evan Williams scored 11 for the Blue Devils and Yasin Mohamud added 10.
Freeport 67, Poland 49
POLAND — Freeport scored 17 in each of the final three quarters to pull away from Poland 67-49 on Monday night in WMC boys’ basketball play.
Toby Holt scored 22 for Freeport (7-1) to lead all scorers. Elias Thomas and Shea Wagner each added on 14 in the win.
Poland (2-6) was paced by sophomore Isaiah Hill, who hit five 3-pointers to finish with 19 points. Jay Hawkes chipped in 10 for the Knights.
Gray-New Gloucester 55, Fryeburg Academy 37
GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER — John Martin scored a game-high 20 points, hitting five 3-pointers, and the Patriots (5-3) used a big first half to get past the Raiders (5-4) on Monday.
Hunter Colby added 10 points for the Patriots, who opened on a 17-6 run and led 28-14 at halftime.
Tucker Buzzell scored 18 points for Fryeburg.
Sacopee Valley 60, Buckfield 33
BUCKFIELD — Sacopee Valley defeated Buckfield 60-33 in boys’ basketball action Monday night.
Michael Murphy led all scorers with 21 to help Sacopee Valley (3-5) to the win. Teagan Meggison added 10 points.
Buckfield (1-6) couldn’t get much going on offense outside of Noah Wiley’s 21 points.
Girls’ basketball
Bangor 45, Edward Little 34
AUBURN — Edward Little entered the third quarter with a 19-15 lead but Bangor stormed back for a 45-34 win in a Class AA North girls’ basketball showdown Monday night.
Libby Fleming led Bangor with 14 points to help the Rams (5-4) make the second-half comeback. Rowan Andrews added 10 points and Abby Fleming six.
Jade Perry led all scorers with 16, including three three-pointers. The Red Eddies (4-4) fell behind in the third, getting outscored 13-2. Hannah Chaput added nine in the loss.
Freeport 53, Poland 23
FREEPORT — Caroline Smith and Rachell Wall each scored 15 points and the Falcons (7-1) raced out to a 27-9 lead at halftime en route to a win over the Knights (2-7) in Freeport.
Hannah Groves added seven points for Freeport, and freshmen Maggie Riendeau and Meredith Feller both scored their first varsity points of the season.
Allison Ferland led the way for Poland with seven points.
Gray-New Gloucester 57, Fryeburg Academy 27
FRYEBURG — Jordan Grant and Bri Jordan combined for 42 points as the Patriots (7-1) beat the Raiders (2-8) on Monday.
Grant scored 26 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, while Jordan added 16 points.
Oxford Hills 77, Lewiston 35
PARIS — Oxford Hills controlled the game and came out of the Class AA contest against Lewiston with a 77-35 girls’ basketball win Monday.
The Vikings (8-1) were led by Cassidy Dumont’s 18 points, followed by Julia Colby’s 17, which included three treys. Oxford Hills jumped out to a 23-11 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.
Emily Strachan led the Blue Devils (3-6) with 11 points. Lewiston had eight players contribute in the scoring column.
Leavitt 60, Maranacook 45
READFIELD — Alison Noniwiecz scored 15 points as the Hornets took the KVAC girls’ basketball victory Monday.
Taylor White added 12 points for Leavitt (3-5), while Emma Chiasson scored 11.
Anna Drillen led the Black Bears (5-3) with 14 points, while Gabby Green had eight points and nine rebounds. Haylee Weeks scored eight points.
Mountain Valley 46, Spruce Mountain 39
RUMFORD — Courtney Carrier scored 10 points and grabbed 20 rebounds to help Mountain Valley hang on for a 46-39 win over Spruce Mountain in girls’ basketball on Monday night.
Carrier’s double-double was intricate in the win for Mountain Valley (8-1), as the Falcons scored 19 points in the fourth quarter to outlast the Phoenix’s (7-3) comeback attempt late in the game.
Both Rylee Sevigny and Saydi Garbarini scored 11 in the victory.
Calley Baker led Spruce with 11 points, with Jaycee Cole following closely behind with seven.
Girls’ hockey
St. Dominic 7, Portland/Deering 1
PORTLAND — The Saints (6-3-1) scored three times in the opening 10:25 and rolled past Portland/Deering (3-9) at Troubh Ice Arena in Portland on Monday.
Avery Lutrzykowski scored twice for St. Dominic, and Gisele Ouellette had two assists.
Inez Braceras scored 8:38 into the second period for Portland with assists from Margaret Smith and Kim Clifford.
