AUBURN — A Lewiston man accused of punching, kicking and stomping a man who was unconscious admitted to a related charge Thursday.
Omar Omar, 23, of 169 Bartlett St. pleaded guilty in Androscoggin County Superior Court to a felony charge of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, punishable by up to five years in prison.
He was sentenced to five years in prison, with 3 1/2 years of that time suspended.
After serving 18 months in prison, Omar will be placed on probation for two years, during which he submit to random searches for dangerous weapons and must complete psychological counseling and treatment.
Omar is barred from having any contact with his victim.
Two counts of felony aggravated assault and one count of misdemeanor assault were dismissed by prosecutors.
According to a police affidavit, Omar on July 2, 2018, punched a 39-year-old man in the head and knocked him unconscious during an evening argument near 227 Blake St. in Lewiston
As the victim lay on the street, Omar stood over him, continuing to punch and kick the man, according to Lewiston police.
Police were later able to view video footage of the attack. They said Omar continued to kick and punch the man, even as witnesses attempted to pull him away.
At one point, police said, Omar started to walk away but then returned to stomp on the unconscious man’s head. The victim suffered a fracture to the bones on the side of his face and multiple cuts and bruises.
The 39-year-old man was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Police were later led to Omar as a suspect when he was identified by witnesses, one of whom was able to pick him out of a photo lineup.
