AARP Tax-Aide program canceled
NORWAY — The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program will not be held for the upcoming tax filing season.
For over 10 years, volunteers have been at the Norway Public Library providing free income tax preparation and electronic filing to low- to moderate-income taxpayers of all ages, with special attention to those 50 and over.
Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, most of the previous volunteers are not available this year. Efforts to recruit and train new volunteers have not been successful. Without having trained local volunteers available the program is not possible.
Those who have had their taxes prepared at the Norway library, and whose returns include only those types of income and expense items for which volunteers are trained, will find the same program is available to them at other locations within Maine.
The nearest AARP Foundation Tax-Aide site that has sufficient volunteers to handle many of the taxpayers who previously came to the library is the Sacred Heart Church in Auburn. To make an appointment, call 207-513-3170. There are also a number of sites in the greater Portland area. The number for those sites is 207-518-8579.
