Legion to hold ceremony
RUMFORD — The Rumford Napoleon Ouellette American Legion Post 24, will perform their annual ceremony of the 76th anniversary of the four chaplains’ sacrifices at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3.
Early on the morning of Feb. 3, 1943, the U.S. troop transport Dorchester was in the icy seas off Greenland. Most of the 900 troops on board were asleep in their bunks when a torpedo smashed into the boat’s flank. Pounding up the ladders, the troops milled in confusion on the decks.
In those moments of panic, there were were four U.S. Army chaplains aboard: 1st Lt. Clark V. Poling, Alexander D. Goode, John P. Washington and George L. Fox, who then led the troops to boxes of life jackets and quickly and efficiently passed them out to the confused men. When the boxes emotied, the four chaplains put their own life preservers on four young GIs and told them to jump.
The Dorchester went down 25 minutes later in a rumble of steam. Some 600 men were lost, but the chaplains had helped save over 200. The last anyone saw of them, they were standing on the deck, arms linked in prayer to the one God they all served. This ceremony is to honor those men and their memory.
This event is open to the public and there will be a light meal to follow.
The monthly membership meeting for the post, auxiliary and SAL will follow the ceremony at approximately 4 p.m.
