HALLOWELL — Registration is open for February and March art workshops at The Harlow, 100 Water St.
Classes include woodcarving, watercolor, mosaics and ceramics.
Exploring Ceramic Cold Finish Techniques — Saturday, Feb. 16, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Facilitator: Shawna Barnes. Learn the difference between traditional ceramic glaze and cold finishes. Hands-on experimentation and exploration will be encouraged. Students will be given bisqued relief tiles and/or ornaments to experiment with, including shoe polish, wood stain, colored pencils, pastels and house paint. Barnes is a ceramic artist specializing in sculpting animals with personality. She is based is Knox and is a teaching artist leader with the Maine Arts Leadership Initiative. Ages 10 and older. $30 for members, $35 for nonmembers.
Mosaic Picture Frames — Saturday, March 2, 10 a.m. to noon. Facilitator: Barb Loken. Create a fun and unique mosaic picture frame embellished with glass and tile. Gain inspiration from Loken’s retrospective exhibition “50 Years of Art,” on view Feb. 15 through March 23. Ages 10 and older. Maximum enrollment is 15. Children $12; adults $15.
Intro to Watercolor Landscape — Saturday, March 9, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Facilitator: Stacey Anderson. This beginners watercolor workshop focuses on landscape painting, working from photographs brought by attendees. Color, composition and use of materials will be the focus. Ages 10 and older. Maximum enrollment is 20. Members $20; nonmembers $25; children $15.
Woodcarving with Rusted Pulchritude — Saturday, March 23, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Facilitators: Aaron Margolis and Deirdre McGrath. Margolis and McGrath create wooden wares and sculptures in their Ellsworth studio. This introductory course teaches how to make a functional cooking spatula out of green wood. A set of carving knives is included in the course fee for all participants. Ages 18 and older. Maximum enrollment is eight and deadline for registration is March 15. Cost is $75 plus $50 for materials.
