AUBURN — A former math teacher at a Freeport Christian school was sentenced Wednesday to serve eight years of an 13-year prison sentence after he pleaded guilty to 10 felony sex charges involving a 15-year-old student.
Derek Michael Boyce, 37 of Woolwich apologized to the girl, who read a statement to the court.
“You made me feel so special,” she read from a prepared statement. “I trusted you.”
But, she continued: “You never loved me. I never meant anything to you.”
The former teacher at Pine Tree Academy in Freeport, a Seventh-Day Adventist Christian school, had a sustained sexual relationship with the teenager for months, prosecutors said.
Boyce, who had remained at Androscoggin County Jail since his arrest last summer on $50,000 bail appeared in in Androscoggin County Superior Court in a blue jail suit, his hands cuffed in front of him.
Assistant District Attorney Lisa Bogue said the mother of the student came home one night to find her daughter naked and engaged in a sex act with Boyce in a dimly lit living room. The mother called police.
The mother had previously believed that Boyce, who was the girl’s math teacher, may have had an inappropriate relationship with the teen.
The girl told her mother she had had sexual intercourse with Boyce before.
Boyce told police his relationship began with the girl after she sustained a sports injury and had been depressed. They communicated over social media messaging applications.
The relationship became romantic in May, then turned sexual in July, he told police. They met in a park where they engaged in sex acts, Boyce said. They had sexual intercourse twice, he said.
