The Stanton Bird Club is the name chosen for the newly formed bird club of Lewiston-Auburn, in tribute to the late Professor Jonathan Y. Stanton of Bates, one of Lewiston’s pioneer ornithologists.
50 years ago: 1969
The Jolly Sisters were entertained Monday, Feb. 3, at the home of Mrs. Esther Thorpe of Harvard Street, Auburn. Mrs. Jessie Allen were the assistant hostess.
25 years ago: 1994
In only his first month of office Mayor John T. Jenkins has talked crime with President Bill Clinton, rubbed elbows with Attorney General Janet Reno and been asked to serve on two national committees on economic community development. “‘What a month,” Jenkins said Wednesday amid constant phone calls at Lewiston city headquarters. “Can you Imagine what another 90 days will be like?” Of course, he got off to a quick start. Jenkins spent four days last week at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Washington, D.C., quizzing federal officials about possible aid for the city and listening to a host of speakers that included members of Clinton’s Cabinet.
