AUBURN — Kristen Huntress and Brooke Reynolds poured in 16 points apiece to lead Central Maine Community College to an 89-62 win over the University of Maine at Machias in both teams’ YSCC finale on Sunday.
Reynolds came off the bench and shot a perfect eight-for-eight from the floor while also contributing five rebounds, three assists and five steals. Huntress made four of her seven 3-point attempts and also had two steals and two assists.
Jordyn Reynolds added eight points, 10 rebounds, six steals, four assists and two steals for the Mustangs (23-2, 16-0 YSCC), who won their 51st consecutive game against a YSCC opponent. Brianna Mulherin chipped in with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists off the bench.
CMCC’s pace and defense was too much for the Clippers, who were down, 54-28 at halftime. The Mustangs forced 26 turnovers and only turned the ball over seven times.
Tate Dolley led all scorers with 37 points for UMaine-Machias (16-9, 12-4). Caitlyn Lyons added eight points and Abbey Allen six for the Clippers.
Central Maine will enter next weekend’s Yankee Conference tournament as the top seed for the third year in a row and fifth time in the last seven seasons.
Men’s basketball
UMBC 67, Maine 66
BANGOR — Four consecutive UMBC 3-pointers over the final 3:11 of regulation proved to be just enough, as the Retrievers escaped the Cross Insurance Center with a 67-66 win over Maine on Sunday.
K.J. Jackson led all scorers with 22 points for UMBC (15-10, 7-3 America East), while Joe Sherburne added 21 points and nine rebounds. Isaiah White led the Black Bears (5-20, 3-7) with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Andrew Fleming added 15 points and eight rebounds in 40 minutes played.
UMBC sunk 3-pointers on four-consecutive possessions, as Jackson and Ricky Council II both nailed one each and Sherburne drained the other two to give UMBC a 4-point lead at 65-61 with 59 seconds left. Before the Retrievers went on the 3-point shooting frenzy, Maine held UMBC to shoot just 2-of-12 on long range shots.
Junior hockey
Kings 6, Thunder 5
FOXBORO, Mass. — Curtis Judd and Joseph Schaefer tallied a goal and three assists each as the South Shore Kings rallied from a 2-0 deficit to edge the Twin City Thunder, 6-5, in USPHL junior hockey action at Foxboro Sports Center on Sunday.
Judd scored what proved to be the game-winning goal, assisted by Schaefer, with 1:29 remaining in regulation to make it 6-4. Zachary Desmarais pulled the Thunder back within one goal with nine seconds remaining but the Thunder ran out of time.
Desmarais also had an assist for Twin City, while Alex Schneider led the scoring with two goals. Jeromey Rancourt and Derric Trudeau also scored for the Thunder.
Jake Horoho stopped 26 of 31 shots he faced in net for South Shore while Thunder netminder Tanner Ames made 25 saves on 31 shots.
