PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Eight of the best wrestlers in Maine will head to the quarterfinals of the New England Interscholastic Wrestling Championships after impressive performances on Friday night.

Oxford Hills leads the way for Maine as both Cole Dunham (182 pounds) and Jeffrey Worster (220 pounds) advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinal round.

Joining the two Vikings in the quarters will be Camden Hills’ Eric Andrews (106), Mt. View’s Mark Ward (145), Marshwood’s David Spinney (152), Portland/South Portland’s Zack Elowitch (160), Scarborough’s Addison Boisvert (285) and Bucksport’s Dave Gross (285).

Dunham picked up a 3-0 win over Josh Beayon of Otter Valley to advance to the quarterfinals. He will face Joel Barlow’s Carson Licastri with a trip to the semifinals on the line.

Worster was a winner by fall in his opening round match Friday before taking down Bristol Eastern’s Trinidad Gonzalez by a 3-1 decision in the round of 16. The Oxford Hills standout will face Mount Anthony’s Chris Mayer in the 220-pound quarterfinals.

Andrews has put together an impressive run in Providence. He picked up a first-period pin in his opening round and then beat Timberlane’s Konrad Parker 6-4 in his second match. The 106-pounder will take on Pentucket’s Tyler Knox in the quarters.

Ward had a bye into the round of 16 where he would roll to a 12-3 major decision over Danbury’s Ben Leblanc. He will face Cumberland’s Aidan Faria in the 145-pound quarterfinals.

Spinney beat Mansfield’s CJ Glaropoulis on Friday. He takes on Suffield’s Hunter Adams in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

After an opening round bye, Elowitch cruised to a 9-0 major decision over Wichester’s Patrick Doherty to reach the quarters. He will face North Kingstown’s Danny Brown as the senior tries to reach the semifinals.

In the 285-pound bracket, Boisvert was a winner by fall in his opening round match and then earned an injury default victory to reach the quarters. He will face Keene’s Kyle Garrapy in the next round.

Gross earned a bye into the round of 16 and then put Wayland’s Brooks Jones on his back late in the match as he pinned his way into a quarterfinal round matchup with Shelton’s Matt Weiner.

Noble’s Josh Cote, the only returning New England medalist from Maine, dropped a 7-4 decision in his opener to Northwestern’s Angelo Folino. The sophomore bounced back with a 9-1 major decision over Wells’ Travis Foster in the consolation round to stay alive at 126 pounds.
