BASEBALL

C.J. Chatham hit two doubles, drove in three runs and scored twice Monday night to lead the Portland Sea Dogs (2-6) to their first road win of the season, 9-2 against the Reading Fightin Phils (5-4).

Chatham put the Sea Dogs ahead 2-0 in the third inning on a double that scored Joseph Monge and Jeremy Rivera. Bobby Dalbec drove in Chatham with a double to make it 3-0, and finished with two hits and two RBI. Josh Tobias added three hits.

Tanner Houck (1-1) earned the win, allowing four hits and one earned run with three strikeouts across five innings.

HIGH SCHOOLS

GIRLS’ SOCCER: Chris Coleman is leaving as Yarmouth High coach to become a Bates College men’s soccer assistant coach.

Coleman coached the Clippers the past two years, winning the Class B state title in 2017 with an 18-0 record. Yarmouth was 10-6 last fall, losing in the regional semifinals. Before Yarmouth, Coleman was the Sanford High girls’ soccer coach.

BOWLING

CANDLEPIN CHAMPIONSHIPS: Lisa Everest of the Big 20 in Scarborough and Richie Grasse of Augusta won classic handicap state championships in the finals held at West-Port Lanes in Westbrook.

Everest defeated Theresa Jack of West-Port in the 10-string women’s final, 1,288 to 1,252. Grasse beat Joel Bowley of Newport, 1,312 to 1,289. The top 12 men and women from a series of eight statewide events competed in the finals.

TENNIS

ANGELL OPEN: Elvi Shelton of Trenton beat Olivia Cutone of Kennebunk, 6-0, 6-2 in the women’s final in Portland – her second straight title and fourth overall. Mesa Mei of Somerville, Massachusetts, won the men’s final over Dana Parziale of Bristol, Rhode Island.

Emily White of Buxton and Jesse Butler of Portland won mixed doubles 6-3, 6-1, over Donna Dwyer of South Portland and Matt Mayer of Portland. Ogden Tompson of Scarborough beat Sonu Bhatia of Westbrook 6-1, 6-2 in the men’s 45’s final. Brian Mavor beat Tom Gross, both of Portland, in the men’s 55’s final, 6-3, 6-2.

SOCCER

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Italian police stopped 54 weapon-carrying Ajax supporters on a fan bus on the eve of Tuesday’s match against Juventus in Turin, and escorted the fans out of the country.

Police said the fans from Amsterdam also were found in possession of armored gloves, mouth guards, and various types of fireworks and smoke bombs.

FOOTBALL

NFL: The New York Giants kept quarterback Eli Manning in the dark until recently about his future with the team, and didn’t give him a warning about the trade of receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns.
