WILTON — The Wilton Free Public Library is more than just a place for people to borrow books, research interesting topics and browse the internet. There are story hours, poetry groups, homeschool book shares, teen games nights, LEGO groups, book talks, and regular fundraisers.
With so much going on, it is no wonder the library is seeing growth.
“We count the number of people who come through the door and we count the materials going out,” Director Jennifer Scott explained to the selectboard Tuesday, Oct. 1. “If you look at this year compared to 2018, our numbers are slightly up in both of those categories.”
As for circulation, so far this year 14,905 items have been borrowed. The numbers for 2018 and 2017 are 12,895 and 10,420 respectively.
“I don’t have a reason for why we are doing really well but I will say that is not the trend for the rest of the state,” she said.
The library has had 13,181 patron visits this year through August. During the same time in 2018, there were 11,803 visits; and 11,527 visits in 2017.
For the youngest patrons, there is a twice a week story hour, complete with fun songs to sing, a book to read and crafts to create.
On Friday, Oct. 4, Children’s Librarian Cassie Savage sat on the floor of the children’s room and read “Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn” by Kenard Pak.
The group then sang songs about pumpkins and apples, and crafted apple trees from toilet paper tubes and construction paper.
Storytime takes place every Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. and Friday at 10:30 p.m., Savage said.
Scott, who has been the director since 2016, said there are several fundraising events in the works. They include an improv show, auction and Halloween dance.
The Wilton Free Public Library Association was incorporated in 1901 and the Goodspeed Memorial Library Building was built in 1915.
The library is supported by the community and has served residents for over 100 years. It welcomes people of all ages to spend time reading, using the Wi-Fi, playing and participating in its programs.
The library, 6 Goodspeed St., is open Tuesday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m; Wednesday, 12 – 7 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. For more information, call 645-4831, visit wilton-free.lib.me.us/wordpress, or find Wilton Free Public Library on Facebook.
