We only had a few people correctly identify last week’s mystery photo of the Lincoln School Apartments at 56 Sixth Street in Auburn. Our winner, Sue Lajoie, lived in Auburn for over 30 years and briefly lived in the neighborhood while working for the city of Auburn and was very familiar with the property.   One caller that did not win but offered a bit of information our audience might like to know:

This is a photo of the front entry to Lincoln School Apartments, showing decorative corbels under the roof. Lincoln School was built on Sixth Street in New Auburn in 1873 to educate, among others, children of workers at the recently constructed Barker Mill.After use as an elementary school and later as an Androscoggin Head Start site, it was rehabilitated in 1984 by Auburn Housing Authority under the direction of local architect Noel Smith. This is one of Auburn’s most attractive buildings and would likely qualify for placement on the National Register of Historic Places.
