100 Years Ago: 1921
Having suffered no ill effects from his attendance at the theatre last week, his first appearance In public was taken after more than eighteen months ago. President Wilson again went to a playhouse tonight. He was accompanied as before by Mrs. Wilson and her brother, John Randolph. As the President this evening chose a musical comedy in contrast with “Abraham Lincoln,” which he saw last week he and his party reached the theatre about five minutes before the performance began and as on his previous visit, aided only by a walker to one of the lower boxes. The audience, not so much taken by surprise as a week ago, immediately rose and cheered. The President bowed.
50 Years Ago: 1971
Except for a security contingent at Panmunjom, US troops are to be pulled back from the demilitarized zone and the Koreas and South Korean troops will guard the entire frontier. President Chung Lee Park announced the redeployment today and said it is due to the Nixon administration’s plan to reduce American strength in South Korean from 62,000 12,000 men by July.
25 Years Ago: 1996
The YWCA Evergreen Seniors Club will meet Friday from noon to 1 p.m. at the YWCA. Paul Caron, composer and musical director of “Lewiston: A New Home,” and Annette Bourque, choreographer and assistant director, will speak about the upcoming encore production of the musical play. Seniors should bring a bag lunch; dessert and coffee will be provided. All senior men and women are welcome.
