WINTHROP — Winthrop needed overtime before it could lock down a 48-45 victory over Madison in boys basketball action Wednesday.
After Winthrop outscored Madison 12-8 in the second period to take a 23-18 lead into halftime, the Bulldogs knocked off three points from the deficit in the third quarter and two more in the fourth to force overtime. In the extra period, the Ramblers scored six points to the Bulldogs’ three.
Winthrop’s Noah Grube led all scorers with 18 points. Logan Baird contributed seven points to the win, and Ian Steele, Brayden Stubbert and Noah Dunn each added six points.
Cameron Cobb’s 16 points led Madison, while Cameron Melancon finished with 10.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
CARRABEC 72, RANGELEY 39: Sara Olson drained five 3-pointers and scored 25 points to pace the Cobras in a road win over the Lakers in Rangeley.
Cheyenne Cahill added 14 points and Courtney Rollins had 11 for Carrebec.
Winnie Larochelle scored a team-high 18 points for Rangeley. Emily Eastlack added 11 points.
EDWARD LITTLE 50, POLAND 26: The Knights dropped their season opener at home against the Red Eddies (1-1).
Freshman Jenny Chaput scored 21 points for Edward Little.
DIRIGO 41, ST. DOMINIC 30 (Tuesday): Page Lueders hit four 3-pointers in the third quarter as the Cougars pulled away from the Saints in Dixfield on Tuesday.
Lueders led all scorers with 12 points. Teammate Grace Robbins added 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and Megan Fletcher pulled down seven rebound and contributed four points.
Ava Apodaca and Jessica Zimmer led St. Dom’s with eight points apiece, while Benedict Yombe finished with seven.
GIRLS HOCKEY
ST. DOMINIC 3, MT. ARARAT/LISBON/MORSE 2: Taryn Cloutier scored two goals to lead the Saints past Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse at the Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn.
Gigi Ouelette added a first-period goal for the Saints, and Hadi Boulet made 21 saves.
Sarah Moore and Allie Hunter scored for the Eagles; Greta Marchond stopped 12 shots.
