When students at the Mountain Valley Middle School in Mexico have a problem, they may get to hash it out before a team of trained peers. This is the result of the Peer Mediation Program taught by school guidance counselor Ann Morton. If two students are in a dispute they can ask for a mediation team to help or they can be referred by another student or staff member. The alternatives are to remain fighting, or perhaps eventually come up in some sort of disciplinary measure. Sometimes students go to the office of Assistant Principal Tom Rowe. “What we’re trying to do is to get them to solve their own problems before it gets to be a disciplinary problem,” Morton said. “It is sometimes easier to be with a peer than with Mr, Rowe or me. They often open up better with a peer” and “feel that a peer understands.”
