SABATTUS — A traffic stop on Route 126 earlier in the week led to the arrest of a Lewiston man who was first charged with driving violations and later, with felony drug charges.
Police said the several grams of crack cocaine and a small amount of marijuana were found on 37-year-old Jovan Jared Calhoun as he was being booked Monday at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn.
Calhoun was arrested on felony charges of possessing a scheduled drug and trafficking in prison contraband. By that time, he had already been charged with driving after having been declared a habitual offender and with violating bail conditions.
Calhoun’s troubles began Monday when Sabattus police officers Phil DiLuca and Mike Rioux stopped his black Lexus sedan for unlawful speed on Sabattus Road.
The officers ultimately discovered Calhoun’s license had been previously revoked and state motor vehicle records listed him as being a habitual offender, according to a news release from Sabattus Police Chief Sheila Wetherbee.
“Calhoun was also on bail conditions resulting from a stay of execution following a conviction for traffic-related offenses. In January, Calhoun was supposed to have turned himself in to serve a monthslong sentence for those offenses but failed to comply,” she wrote. “Calhoun was arrested for violating the conditions as well as the new operating after revoked/habitual offender charge. Calhoun was also found to have an extensive record that included numerous drug arrests.”
As Calhoun was being booked at the county jail, police said, corrections officers found the crack cocaine tied in a cellophane baggie, along with marijuana in a separate container, concealed near Calhoun’s genitals.
Calhoun remained at the jail without bail Thursday.
