A Damariscotta painter is busy transforming new sheetrock walls of a Bates Mill restaurant into scenes that conjure up a time when the mill was teeming with textile workers. “Most are going to be period pieces when the mill was in its heyday,” Glen Chadbourne, 36, explained of the nostalgic murals he’s painting inside Da Vinci’s. Chadbourne has been at work inside the building brick-oven pizzeria and Italian eatery for three weeks and will continue painting until it’s expected opening in early April. Comic book artist by trade, Chadbourne has painted murals on restaurants from Maine to Florida, including dancing arachnids in the Barking Spider and a cat and faux window at the Great Impasta, in Brunswick. He has worked with horror-meister Stephen King and published his own comic series “Chillville” and “Farmer Field’s Horror Harvest.” The whimsical features of the people in his murals have more in common with the hyperbole of cartoons than with the realism of a Wyeth or Homer.
