FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington rallied back to take the lead in the first game of a doubleheader against UMaine-Presque Isle, only for the Owls to answer back in the top of the seventh to secure a win. The Beavers tried rallying in the bottom of the seventh of the second game, but suffered the sweep (6-4, 10-7) at Prescott Field on Saturday.
Makayla Wilson’s three-run double in the sixth inning of the first game gave the Beavers a brief 4-3 lead, but Roni Shaw and Leavitt grad Delanie Strout had consecutive two-out, RBI singles in the seventh to score three runs and take the lead back. Former Lisbon standout Kiley Merritt and Olivia Paradis both singled in the bottom of the seventh and reached second and third with one out, but UMPI pitcher Brookelynn Garcia closed the door to finish off a complete-game victory.
Paradis had two of the Beavers’ seven hits, and Gray-New Gloucester grad Chelsea Davis was 1 for 4 with an RBI.
Broghan Gagnon pitched a complete game for UMF.
In the second game, the Beavers were down 3-2 after two innings until the Owls scored six in the top of the third to take control. UMF got two runs back in the fourth to cut it to 9-4. Pinch hitter Morgan Noyes started the rally in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single. Wilson and Kayla Hammer had consecutive RBI groundouts, but the Beavers couldn’t get any closer after those two outs.
Winthrop grad Kayleigh Oberg was 3 for 3 with two RBIs in the game, and Merritt was 2 for 3. Strout went 2 for 5 in game two for UMPI, which got a complete game from Olivia Riitano.
