Corinne Zanolli converted a penalty stroke with 2:15 remaining to give third-seeded Stanford a 2-1 win over No. 2 Maine in an America East field hockey semifinal Thursday in West Long Branch, New Jersey.
Zanolli also set up the game’s first goal, by Sarah Johnson late in the second quarter. Brooke Sulinski tied it for Maine (7-4) with an assist from Chloe Walton early in the third.
Stanford (9-2), ranked 19th in the nation, advances to the final on Saturday against top-seeded Monmouth, which beat UMass Lowell, 4-1.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
SOUTHERN MAINE 20, RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE 3: Alex Farley and Rachel Shanks each scored four goals in the first half as the Huskies (5-2, 4-2 Little East) opened a 14-1 margin and rolled past the Anchorwomen (1-6, 0-6) in Gorham.
Shanks finished with seven goals, Megan Violette added six, and Farley ended up with five goals and two assists.
FOOTBALL
RULE CHANGE: The NCAA playing rules oversight panel approved a tweak to the overtime format, mandating that teams go for 2 after touchdowns in the second overtime.
If games go to a third overtime, each team will get one play to score from the 3-yard line. Teams will alternate 2-point attempts until only one team is successful.
