BOSTON — Jeimer Candelario hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning Wednesday night, lifting the Detroit Tigers to a 6-5 win over the Boston Red Sox.
Jonathan Schoop opened the 10th with a bloop single to right field against reliever Garrett Whitlock, putting two runs on base for Candelario, who hit a drive into the right-field grandstand.
The Red Sox answered with two runs in the bottom of the 10th on an RBI single by Marwin Gonzalez and an error, but Michael Fulmer got the final two outs with two men on to end it.
Boston tied the game in seventh on J.D. Martinez’s 10th home run of the season – a two-run shot.
That prevented Tigers pitcher Casey Mize from getting a win despite allowing just three hits and one run in six innings. Red Sox starter Martin Perez gave up three runs – two earned – in 5 2/3 innings.
Boston took a 1-0 lead in the second inning without a hit. Mize walked the first two batters – Xander Bogaerts and Christian Vazquez. Bogaerts advanced on a fielder’s choice and scored on Christian Arroyo’s groundout.
Detroit got an unearned run in the fourth when center fielder Franchy Cordero misplayed a base hit by Jacoby Jones, allowing Candelario to score.
Jones then broke the tie in the sixth with a two-out, two-run single.
The Red Sox had a chance to win it in the bottom of the ninth, but left fielder Robbie Grossman made a sliding catch on a line drive to left-center by Bogaerts with the bases loaded.
