The “Sense of Wonder Art Contest,” presented by the Friends of the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, continues this month.
People can submit up to three art items on friendsofrachelcarsonnwr.org/art-contest until June 25, and a special jury will select a winner in both categories — visual art and writing — on the last Friday of the month.
The Friends are accepting any visual art form submitted as a photograph of a painting, drawing, sculpture or as a photo in its own right. The written submission could be a poem or a short essay or story.
This month’s contest is open to all who have been inspired to write or create after experiencing the many landscapes of the refuge. The refuge is comprised of trails in Wells, Kennebunk, Kittery, Saco, Biddeford and a few other areas.
Each submitted art item must depict how the natural habitats and wildlife of the refuge are experienced by the artist who submits their work.
Submit photos in JPG format, no smaller than 1000 pixels on the longest side. Poetry can be in either a Word or PDF file, or embedded into an image in JPG format.
All winning selections from the year-long contest will be compiled and published in a 2022 wall calendar commemorating the refuge’s 50th anniversary celebration. The “People’s Choice” recognition will be awarded in 2022 for the calendar’s cover.
The contest continues in July with the theme of “Refuge Birds of Summer.” Poetry and photos are accepted from July 1-30.
