The Kennebec Valley Garden Club, in collaboration with Jeff Ladd, principal at Winthrop Elementary School, and students of Jinny Bryant’s kindergarten class, planted an ornamental flowering pear tree on the school grounds May 27 in commemoration of Arbor Day.
The project is “Carbon Sequestration” and the celebration of trees.
Karen Foster, chairwoman of the horticulture committee, presented the program along with Pam Johnson and Nancy Voisine. Each student was given a “Hooty Owl” bookmark telling about trees from the garden club.
DR Struck Landscapers put the tree in place, and Robin Struck gave a commentary on the trees’ characteristics. She presented a trowel to each student along with one for the principal and members who helped spread the loam. The students are encouraged to care for and watch its growth.
Penny Pray from the Winthrop Historical Society documented the planting.
