100 Years Ago: 1921

MacMillian’s ship, the “Bowdoin,” arrived Sunday evening in Wiscasset, where it will remain some time before leaving for the Arctic regions. Many Lewiston and Auburn people motored down to look over the ship for the last time before it sailed on the exploration expedition which will keep MacMillan and his crew in the far North for one and possibly two years.

50 Years Ago: 1971

Paving work on North Bridge caused a traffic tie up in the Twin Cities a good part of Monday, backing up traffic in both cites. Police in Auburn and Lewiston spent considerable time directing traffic by hand as a new pavement surface was placed on the bridge. As a result of the work by the state, the North Bridge is now smooth again, after many days of bone-jolting driving over raised joints between sections of the bridge. At one point early in the afternoon, the bridge was so jammed with vehicles that an ambulance headed for a hospital with an accident victim had to stop in a line of traffic and proceed at a snail’s pace across the bridge as there was no place for traffic ahead to move aside.

25 Years Ago: 1996

Maplebrook Farm, the Casco home of Peter Schoonmaker, will be the setting from 9:30 to 11a.m. Wednesday, for the 1996 Library Morning Coffee, with the guest speaker Maine children’s book author and illustrator, Kelly Paul Briggs. Kelly will speak about her book, Island Alphabet, An ABC of Maine Islands,” and the experiences which led her to write and illustrate it. Copies will be available to purchase, and the author will autograph books following the presentation. Briggs, a Camden native grew up in Maine and has sailed extensively in Penobscot Bay. She also spent two summers caretaking the flock of island sheep and the old stone house on Mosquito Island.
